On February 10 (the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month), the Fourth Yan Emperor Lantern Festival in Gaoping, Shanxi officially commenced at the Yan Emperor Mausoleum Scenic Area with the theme “Admire Lanterns, Explore Ancient Architecture, Experience New Year Traditions.” Tens of thousands of dazzling lanterns illuminated the night, while the “1+5+N” series of activities launched in full swing. Citizens and tourists alike strolled through the sea of lights, experienced intangible cultural heritage, participated in folk customs, and welcomed a warm and joyous Chinese New Year steeped in millennia of tradition.

At 3:30 PM, the solemn atmosphere enveloped Yangtou Mountain. Following the completion of the fire-drilling ritual, the sacred flame was ignited. Fifty-six representatives from various sectors stood ready at designated relay points. As the sacred flame approached, torches clashed, sparks flew, and the torchbearers ran forward with heads held high. The relay procession advanced along Yangtou Mountain Square, Shennong Town, and Yandi Avenue. Along the route, crowds gathered, waving and cheering enthusiastically.

After over two hours of relay, the sacred flame successfully reached the Yandi Mausoleum Scenic Area, completing the final leg of the relay.

Attendees dressed in the traditional attire of China's 56 ethnic groups, all torchbearers, and 500 lantern-bearing citizens followed the flame along the Pilgrimage Avenue, eventually gathering at the Mountain Gate Plaza. The entire crowd stood in solemn silence as ceremonial music and resounding songs filled the air. Performances including the Eight-Tone Music Ensemble, lion dances, and the Nine-Lotus Lantern Display unfolded in succession, collectively welcoming the solemn moment of the Lantern Festival's opening.

“5, 4, 3, 2, 1!” With the collective countdown, the Fourth Yandi Lantern Festival officially commenced. Simultaneously across all city venues, lanterns illuminated the sacred flame, bonfires blazed, and crowds joined in song and dance. The atmosphere instantly filled with laughter, warmth, and festive harmony.

Running from February 10 to March 8, this year's festival centers on the theme “Shared Chinese Heritage, Prayers for National Prosperity and People's Well-being.” It innovatively introduces a “1+5+N” event series: one high-profile opening ceremony, five core venues, and numerous supporting activities. This format deeply integrates Yan Emperor culture, ancient architectural heritage, folk performances, and modern light art. This creates a Spring Festival celebration that unites cultural heritage, immersive experiences, and leisure entertainment. (By Jiao Yanxia and Niu Gang)
